The Galleria at Erieview is a 275,000 sf retail and restaurant concourse that has spurred other downtown development, increased the prestige of the adjacent 40-story Tower at Erieview office building, and continued to attract affluent suburban shoppers back downtown. This landmark building sits above an existing parking garage, necessitating the use of lightweight materials and systems to minimize the structure’s weight. The resultant’s 85-foot arched roof of lacy white steel trusses and pale green glass creates a dramatic interior with upward views of the tall buildings in the vicinity. Anthony Belluschi served as Principal-in-Charge of the project while with Kober/Belluschi Associates.
To accommodate the original slope of the plaza on which the Galleria is now located, the building steps down toward the tower lobby in a series of ramps and stairs. Moreover, since the entrance to the adjacent tower is offset from the monumental front entrance to the concourse that is framed by an 80-foot arch of Finnish granite, the building and its arched roof shift northward in three segments so that the entryway to the adjacent office tower can be located inside the new enclosed space.
The Galleria has received awards from the American Institute of Steel Construction and the International Council of Shopping Centers.
