Sportsgirl Centre is an 11-story, 120,000 sf urban mixed-use building in the fashionable area of Melbourne’s Collins street, which is characterized by numerous upscale retail facilities. Anthony Belluschi, as Principal-in-Charge at Anthony Belluschi Architects, created a building and public space that exude excitement and drama using a modern yet timeless architectural language that simultaneously respects the center’s prominent location within a historic district and presents a fresh design for a retail and office development. Buchan, Laird & Bawden Pty. Ltd. of Sydney, Australia served as the Architect of Record.
The first four floors of Sportsgirl Centre house a collection of exclusive retail stores, while the remaining floors are allocated as prime speculative office space. Inside, architectural features include an eleven-story atrium surrounded by pedestrian circulation levels overlooking the four-story retail space, and a seven-story glass wall that illuminates the full expanse of the atrium.
Among the recognitions that the project has received are the BOMA Award, Monitor Magazine’s Award in Centers & Stores of Excellence, the International Engineering Society’s Illumination Design Award, and a Design Award from the AIA Colorado Chapter.
