This speculative 18-story, 430,000 sf addition to a four-story building located in Chicago’s rapidly developing West Loop features a new steel and glass facade combined with a unique 13th-floor outdoor deck to create an updated and exciting modern look. A street arcade clad in limestone and granite ties the expanded building into the context of the neighborhood. Located directly across the street from Union Station
Special measures had to be taken during design and construction to maintain operation of an MCI switching station located on the ground floor of the existing building, located directly across the street from Union Station. The design solution, which included strengthening the outer structural columns and inserting a stacked series of inverted V-shaped trusses, transferred the weight of the new upper floors over and around the station and allowed the station to remain operational while the building was quintupled in size to take full advantage of its prime location.
An upgraded redundant electrical system and chilled water plant were also incorporated to accommodate the technological requirements of prospective tenants. Anthony Belluschi Architects served as the Design Architect, with Anthony Belluschi / OWP/P as the Architect of Record.
