Special measures had to be taken during design and construction to maintain operation of an MCI switching station located on the ground floor of the existing building, located directly across the street from Union Station. The design solution, which included strengthening the outer structural columns and inserting a stacked series of inverted V-shaped trusses, transferred the weight of the new upper floors over and around the station and allowed the station to remain operational while the building was quintupled in size to take full advantage of its prime location.
